⚠️ Safety first: never operate this tool while driving. If you're using it in a moving vehicle, have a passenger start/stop it, or mount your device securely where the driver doesn't need to touch it.
What this speedometer does
Real GPS speed
Uses your device's own GPS chip through the browser's Geolocation API - not an estimate, not a guess.
Multiple units
Switch instantly between km/h, mph, m/s and knots to match how you think about speed.
Live analog + digital dial
A smooth animated needle alongside a big, legible digital number, easy to read at a glance.
Session max speed
Automatically remembers the fastest speed reached this session, with one tap to reset it.
Accuracy indicator
See your GPS accuracy in meters and a plain-language Good / Fair / Poor signal quality reading.
Private by design
Everything runs locally in your browser. Your location and speed are never sent to any server.
A free, private GPS speedometer for any device
GPS Speedometer turns any phone, tablet, or GPS-equipped device into a live speed tracker, without downloading an app. It reads your location through your browser's built-in Geolocation API and converts your movement into a real-time speed reading, shown on both a digital readout and an animated analog-style dial.
Whether you want to check your walking pace, your cycling speed, or act as a simple passenger-side speed check in a car, boat, or train, this tool gives you an honest, unobstructed view of your current speed alongside GPS accuracy so you know how much to trust each reading.
Because everything runs locally in your browser, there's nothing to install and nothing about your movement is ever sent to a server. It's a fast, free, and privacy-respecting alternative to dedicated speedometer apps - just open the page, tap Start, and go.
Frequently asked questions
How does this GPS speedometer work?
It uses your browser's built-in Geolocation API to read your device's GPS location repeatedly. From the change in position over time (or a direct speed value some devices provide), it calculates your current speed and displays it on the dial.
Is it accurate?
Accuracy depends on your device's GPS hardware and signal conditions. On a phone outdoors with a clear sky view, it's typically accurate to within a few percent. Indoors, in tunnels, or on older devices, accuracy drops and readings may jump around - the accuracy and signal-quality indicators help you judge how much to trust a given reading.
Why does it show no speed on my computer?
Most desktop and laptop computers don't have a GPS chip, so the browser can't provide real movement-based speed data. This tool is designed primarily for phones and tablets that have GPS hardware and can be carried in a moving vehicle, bike, or on foot.
Is it safe to use in a car?
The tool itself is safe, but you should never handle a phone while driving. Have a passenger operate it, or mount the device securely in a hands-free holder so the driver never needs to touch the screen.
Does this app track or store my location?
No. All GPS processing happens locally in your browser. We never transmit, log, or store your location or speed data on any server - see our Privacy Policy for details.
Do I need to install anything?
No. This is a website, not an app. It runs directly in your mobile or desktop browser using standard web APIs - just tap Start and allow location access.
Why do I need to grant location permission?
Reading speed requires access to your device's location sensors, which browsers only expose after you explicitly grant permission. We only request it when you press Start, never automatically.
What units does it support?
You can switch between kilometers per hour (km/h), miles per hour (mph), meters per second (m/s), and knots at any time using the unit selector.
